Join us for a Squiggla workshop experience that explores mark making as a performative event where the body and material come together.
We begin with a slow looking tour of Max Gimblett’s exhibition The Open Door at Gow Langsford Gallery Onehunga, exploring Gimblett’s calligraphic mark making and dynamic tension of structure and spontaneity.
Taking inspiration from Gimblett and other artists working in the tradition of action painting and flow-state making, and exploring Squiggla’s sensed-based actions, we will encounter the page as an arena for intuitive mark making.
Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with a range of mark making tools, make their own brushes from natural materials and work on a large-scale piece.
This Squiggla workshop will be led by artist and educator Catherine Thomson.
